Maldives Visas and Currency

Written by Caitlyn Howells on December 28th, 2008

You don’t usually need a pre-purchased visa to travel to the Maldives as long as you have a valid passport and sufficient funds to last for your vacation. You should check with your travel agent prior to booking in case the rules and regulations have changed.

The currency used in the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiya (MVR) which is divided into 100 laari. There are no cash machines on the islands and travellers cheques are rarely used. Many resorts will have foreign exchange facilities where you can exchange US Dollars for local currency. You can usually charge expenses at your resort to your room. When you check out you can settle the bill in US Dollars or by credit card.
